July 20 SFCCA Meeting Features Silver Spring Author

Our upcoming bi-monthly community meeting promises to be a very interesting one.  Woodside Park resident and historian Dr. Robert Oshel will discuss his latest book, Silver Spring and the Civil War, Monday, July 20, at 7:00 PM at the Schweinhaut Senior Center.

Dr. Oshel’s illustrated presentation, complete withss and civil war photos and maps, will draw upon contemporary accounts and memoirs. He will recount for us the tumultuous period culminating in July 1864 when Confederate troops, under the command of General Jubal Early, spread across the fields and orchards of Silver Spring on their way to invade Washington, DC.

It’s a rich historical perspective of our community’s past you won’t want to miss. And, not to neglect our community’s present, updates and Association business will follow the presentation.

Come learn about Silver Spring Village and ‘aging in place’!

Join your neighbors on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 7pm for the next SFCCA Community Meeting. The meetings take place at the Schweinhaut Senior Center located at 1000 Forest Glen Road.

Silver Spring Village, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that offers needed services and programs for older adults who wish to “age in place” — to remain as long as possible in their own homes, amid familiar people and surroundings. Like other Villages throughout the U.S. — it is one of approximately 36 villages either established or under development in the Washington D.C. area — its network of “neighbors helping neighbors” aims to support individuals and to strengthen the local community. Help includes things like transportation, minor home repairs, and grocery shopping, plus a program of social and educational events. Participation by a diverse mix of residents within the Village’s defined geographic area enhances the quality of life for the entire community. This is not just for folks who are getting up there in years — people of all ages can be involved.

Mae Novak, past vice-president and current chair of Silver Spring Village’s volunteers committee, will be the featured speaker at our March 16 meeting. Come to the meeting learn more about Silver Spring Village and about other activities and opportunities in our neighborhood. Click here to visit the Village’s site.
