Volunteering

As a community-based, all-volunteer organization, SFCCA’s success depends entirely on the active participation of neighborhood residents.

There are many ways to become involved. A wide variety of volunteer opportunities are always available, so chances are you may be able to put your own interests and talents to work on one or more of SFCAA’s standing committees and/or special projects.

Volunteers are needed in the broad areas as defined by the Committees set forth below. Examples of typical activities and some of the specific tasks that fall within the scope of each Committee have been identified:

  • Public Safety Includes crime prevention and awareness; serving as liaison to the community services officer in Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) District 3; pedestrian safety; point of contact for annual National Night Out; sidewalks and crosswalks; cut-through traffic and speeding on neighborhood roads.
    .
  • Public Works Includes communicating with Washington Gas, PEPCO and WSSC on an as-needed basis; reporting any need for street repairs to the appropriate authorities; developing ideas and plans to enhance South Four Corners’ natural environment, such as our tree canopy.
    .
  • Membership Welcoming new neighbors; increasing SFCCA paid membership; encouraging greater attendance at community-wide meetings and participation in other SFCCA-sponsored activities.
    .
  • Zoning, Land Use, and Transportation Involves monitoring, evaluating and informing the neighborhood of any proposed zoning changes that may affect our community; tracking government-funded projects, as well as those proposed by  private developers, that may impact the livability of the greater Four Corners area; may involve attending (either remotely or in-person) meetings of the Montgomery County Planning Board and/or County Council; advocating for data-driven, multimodal approaches to easing traffic congestion on our roadways.
    .
  • Communications – May include helping out with newsletter production and distribution; soliciting locally-based businesses to advertise in the newsletter; keeping SFCCA website and Facebook page up-to-date; maintaining and monitoring SFCCA’s listserv.
    .
  • Social Events – Brings all community-wide social activities (such as the annual Community Yard Sale and Halloween parade) under one big umbrella; involves planning, coordinating, and producing SFCCA’s bi-annual, much anticipated Community Day that is held at the Schweinhaut Senior Center on Forest Glen Road.

If volunteering in any of these areas or for any specific assignment appeals to you, we would love to hear from you. Please email SFCCA.President@gmail.com and we will see to it that, based on your expressed interest(s), you are assigned to the appropriate committee.
