Garden Tours are being enjoyed by neighbors throughout the South Four Corners Community

Submitted by Marty Maher

On Tuesday morning, August 28, Jeanne Berman coordinated the latest SFCCA Garden Tour.  Our neighbor, Mr. Lester Viyalta, greeted us with goodies from his native country of  Nicaragua while music streamed from his garden on Gilmoure Drive.

Lester grows and cooks his own produce.  Much of his vegetable garden was maturing so we saw pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and melons.  Lester also showed our group his native zucchini called pipian. He provided photos and offered seeds for our gardens. The vegetable garden begins on the side of his house and continues through the entire backyard. The flower garden in the front yard was beautiful and filled with sunflowers, zinnias, celosia, cleome, and many others.

Lester was able to grow his own corn and showed us his one remaining corn plant. Butterflies, beneficial bees, and birds were plentiful and so busy that we watched with no fear of stings.

Many thanks to Jr .Girl Scout Troop 4903.

This summer they collected 88 bags of groceries for the St. Luke’s food pantry in one week. What a remarkable project for a group of 10 year old girls to pull off, and inspiring to see each girl realize how they can make a difference in our community.  These girls really put their hearts into this project and worked hard. It is a good reminder about how each of us can make our neighborhood better.

These girls also placed no dumping plaques on most of the storm drains in the neighborhood to remind neighbors that what you dump- in the sewer, or in the street, or in your driveway- ends up going into Sligo Creek, the Anacostia River, and our State Treasure, the Chesapeake Bay.  As part of this project you might have found information about dumping at your front door, and perhaps saw the girls in action. We should be very proud of these young ladies who placed plaques on 50 storm drains.

SFC garden tours are in full bloom

Make sure you check the SFCCA listserv for updated times and locations. Two more neighbors have signed up – one for Aug. 17 and another on Aug. 21.
Jeanne is also looking for more gardeners to offer their advice on what has worked and not worked in their gardens.  She notes the most fun she’s had during this “project” is to see the differences in the gardens that are in our community. We hope to see you and others out in the garden.
Anyone interested in offering their garden in September or even in October? Contact Jeanne Berman

National Night Out was a great success – thanks to everyone!

On Tuesday, August 7, the SFCCA celebrated our 12th National Night Out at South Four Corners Park. The weather was perfect and over 80 neighbors celebrated the evening with popsicles. The evening’s entertainment was provided by six officers from the Montgomery County PD, three officers from the Montgomery County Parks PD and McGruff The Crime Dog! There were too many police cars to count.  Submitted by Marty Maher
